Senior SAW Counselor Application

Program Background

A newly designed position, Senior SAW Counselor Coordinators for the Summer Academic Workshop (SAW) serve as a knowledgeable support and role-model to the SAW Counselors. The SAW Counselor Coordinator's primary role is to provide additional encouragement, support and general guidance on being an effective mentor/counselor.  

Residency in a campus residence hall is required. Please note that Labor Day Holiday is included in this work commitment.  

Commitments

Dates of Role: 06/1/2026 - 09/11/2026

  • There is flexibility to work remotely during 06/1/2026 - 08/10/2026
  • Onsite support (housing and meals) will not be provided during 06/1/2026 - 08/10/2026  
  • Housing provided during 08/11/2026 – 09/7/2026 
    • For the remaining days of SAW 9/8/2026 - 9/11/2026, SAW Student leaders will need to have their own housing. SES will assist with moving a limited number of belongings from SAW residence hall to a student’s academic year housing on Big Switch, Tuesday, September 8th, 2026. More info will be shared leading up to training.  
  • Meals provided during 08/11/2026 – 09/11/2026 
    • If you are living on campus SES will cover your meals through the start of the returning student meal plan 
  • Labor Day, 09/07/26, is considered a workday in this position 

Responsibilities

  • Senior SAW Counselor Orientation Part 1 & 2
    • Participate in orientations on:
      • Part 1 & 2: Week of June 1st (date, time, and location TBD)
  • Summer Hours for SAW Training and Program Development
    • Bi-weekly 1:1s with SAW GA
    • Monthly 1:1s with SES Assistant Director, MJ Nataren
    • Attend SAW Programming meetings as scheduled and led by SAW Director
    • Weekly team meetings with SES AD and SAW GA to co-create training workshops for SAW Counselors, who will serve as mentors to SAW participants (starting week of June 1st, 2026)
    • Co-facilitate training workshops for SAW Counselor Training before the start of SAW
  • Senior SAW Counselor Training
    • Move into Residence Hall Tuesday, 8/11/2026
    • Attend Senior SAW Counselor Training, Tuesday, 8/11/2026 - Friday, 8/14/2026
  • SAW Counselor Training
    • Co-Lead training workshops for SAW Counselor Training with SES AD and SAW GA, Sunday, 8/16/2026 - Thursday, 8/20/2026
  • Residential Program Support
    • Work closely with the SAW Graduate Assistant to organize and manage the daily duties such as keeping communal areas tidy/clean, supplying SAW Counselors with Res Hall materials for activities from the supply room, and notifying SAW GA of any maintenance and needs within the Res Hall
  • Mentorship
    • Facilitate individual check-ins with 3-4 SAW Counselors throughout the SAW Program.
    • Complete Check-In Form for each 1:1 post check-in
    • Work in collaboration with the SAW GA to support the SAW Counselors
  • SAW Programming
    • Co-facilitate SES Workshops alongside SES Staff
    • SES Assistant Director, and SAW GA throughout SAW
    • Attend weekly SAW Student Leader Team meetings throughout SAW
    • Meet 1:1 with SAW GA weekly throughout SAW
    • Support SAW Programming, including but limited to: Welcome, Move In**, Kick Off, SES Workshops, Excursions, and Closing
**during move in there is a lot of physical labor (i.e., moving luggage in and out of cars, moving boxes
into dorm rooms, etc.) if this a barrier please let the SAW team know

Qualifications

  • Must be a current or former leader in an SES Cohort Program (Knight Scholars, Compass Mentorship Program, and/or Summer Academic Workshops)  
  • Must have 3.0 GPA at the time of application   
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic and non-academic standing  
  • Available live in a campus residence hall from Tuesday, August 11th, 2026 – Monday,
    September 7th, 2026
     
  • Available to be on campus from Tuesday, August 11th, 2026 – Friday, September 11th, 2026,
    without additional commitments (i.e. in a class, an internship, or other student leader position,
    like Peer Adviser, or Family Ambassador)
  • Strong interest in the support and development of low-income and/or first-generation college students

Compensation

Senior SAW Counselor Coordinators will be paid hourly at a $17 rate. Hours worked will vary but an estimate of hours worked is listed below: 

  • Summer- 15- 20 hours per week
  • Training- 35-45 hours per week
  • SAW Program: 90-130 hrs overall* 

* Senior SAW Counselors will be entering their hours into Workforce NU.

Senior SAW Counselor Application  

The Senior SAW Counselor application collects basic information and has an essay portion. Once the application is submitted you will receive a confirmation email. Please read this email carefully as it provides a sign up for individual interviews. Below are the essay questions. 

The Senior SAW Counselor Application includes 3 essays: 

  1. Tell us why you want to be a Senior SAW Counselor and what you hope to bring to the role (150 words)   
  2. Please share your definition of leadership and provide an example of a time you had to serve as a leader amongst your peers. What was your leadership style/approach? (200 words)   
  3. Write to a rising sophomore who is nervous about applying for their first leadership role at Northwestern. Include your experience applying and serving in leadership positions, the challenges (if any) and how you addressed them. Additionally, what did you learn from those experiences and what would you want this student to take away from your experience? (300 words)  

Individual Interviews

In-person interviews will take place:
  • Thursday, April 16th, 2026 | 10:00-10:30 AM, 12:15-12:45 PM, 1:00-1:30 PM, 1:45-2:15 PM, 2:30-3:00 PM, 3:15-3:45 PM, and 4:00-4:30 PM
Once the application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. The confirmation email will
have a link to sign up for an individual interview. Please read this email carefully and complete it by the
deadline listed. Interviews will be about 30 minutes.
